One of the popular exercises used in Crossfit(r) is ‘Wall Balls’. Wall Balls are both very simple and crazy hard. Wall Balls are a full body weight bearing exercise and are great for rapidly strengthening the core muscles of the abdomen and lower back while improving overall conditioning. They are also plyometric (more on that later). While no doubt previously done informally by many, Crossfit seems the first to have formalized it as an exercise sequence.

In sports such as basketball or lacrosse wall balls are traditionally a series of drills done against a wall. Here they are done with a definite Crossfit burnout (metabolic overload) twist. The Crossfit idea of a Wall Ball is to throw a medicine ball upwards against a wall, catch it in a squat position and then explosively spring back out of the squat throwing the ball back up. Then squat catch, spring up and throw, squat catch, spring up and throw – and repeat sequence as many times as specified.

Medicine ball training is one of the oldest forms of strength and conditioning training. A medicine ball is a weighted ball and is traditionally roughly the diameter of the shoulders – 14 inches. Medicine balls were a staple of 18th and 19th century English gyms and early references to Persian wrestlers training with sand filled bladders date back almost 3000 years.

To do a Wall Ball start out facing the wall about 12-18 inches back. The throwing motion is much like basketball – start out by sinking down and keep your elbows down with the ball held evenly close to the chest. Unlike basketball, you descend all the way into a squat position, and then explode into a throw. It is important to do a full squat – your rear should hit a medicine ball if one was placed on the floor behind you. Whether you take one breath per throw or two, breathe deeply and calmly, synchronizing your breath with the throws. Keep your movements even and smooth on both the ascent and descent.

The extension of the leg muscles as you catch and sink into the squat, then their rapid contraction with the throw is the plyometric part. Plyometric exercises are designed to develop and increase muscle power. Plyometrics emphasize the rapid stretch of a muscle followed by a rapid shortening of the same muscle. Simple bouncing jumps are a good example. Like the Crossfit-style squat-thruster, the Wall Ball is basically a squat-push press combination done continuously with a light weight as a plyometric exercise.

In Crossfit workouts Wall Balls are often done as part of a couplet or triplet series along with sit-ups, pull-ups, or some Olympic lift such as push-press in a 21-15-9 sequence. For example a triplet of 21 Wall Balls followed by 21 pull-ups and 21 weighted push-presses, 15 Wall Balls, 15 pull-ups, 15 weighted push presses, and finally 9 Wall Balls, pull-ups, and weighted push presses.

Originally the goal was to throw the medicine ball up 8-9 feet, but with the advent of the Crossfit games the standard became 10 feet for men and 8 feet for women. The usual specified Rx weight (”Rx” is short for ‘as prescribed’ in Crossfit terms) is a 20lbs for men and 14lbs for women. Luggage Carts – Large Wheels Vs Small Wheels

Luggage carts can be purchased with large wheels or small wheels, but what should the smart shopper look for? My vote is for large six-inch wheels. Small two-inch or three-inch wheels on a luggage cart for a child or small adult may be perfectly adequate and also implies that the load will not be extremely large. But if you are an average-sized adult or intend to carry many pounds of stuff on your cart you really should look for a well-made utility cart that has at least six-inch wheels with ball bearings and rubber tires, too. There is no rule that says a child or small adult should not use large wheels with ball bearings either – and now that I think about it, is there any reason that a child or small adult should not have all the advantages of six-inch wheels too? None that I can think of. So there is my vote: big wheels are better for all sizes of people. And here is why:

The first advantage to big six-inch wheels on a luggage cart is maneuverability. With the small built-in wheels usually found on a piece of baggage or on a small-wheeled cart, when you attempt to go over a curb you actually have to stop, pick the bag or cart up, position the wheels back on the pavement, face the direction of travel once more and then proceed. But when you approach a curb with a big-wheeled utility cart you just step up, roll the cart up the wall of the curb and keep going. The rolling action takes place by letting the large six-inch wheels roll up next to the curb as you walk and then giving slightly more pull to roll it up the side. It is a very smooth natural action. You barely even have to pause and you do not have to turn around and look. You can feel it rolling up the curb. When you are in a rush this is a time saver. Of course if your load is extremely heavy or tall you really should slow down a little and carefully roll the load up. Remember: safety first – the back you save may be your own.

The second advantage to big six-inch wheels on a luggage cart is less “clackity clackity.” If your cart or bag has small wheels, especially if they are made of plastic and do not have rubber tires, you get a whole lot of “clackity clackity” as you walk along, particularly on a tiled floor, brick pavement, or cobble stones. And the faster you go, the louder it gets. And each repetitive bump on a plastic wheel promotes cracking – meaning that at some point that wheel is going to splinter apart and fall off.

Aside from all that “clackity clackity” being very annoying to yourself and passersby, it will drowned out the voice of a travel companion as you walk along trying to converse about the scenery or making plans. You cannot hear yourself think! But, if you have a well-made luggage cart with six-inch wheels, rubber tires and precision ball bearings it will not even whisper as you go along. Since there is almost no noise at all, it becomes a “non-issue.”

And the smooth noiseless ride of precision ball bearings rarely, if ever, squeak like plastic wheels or hubs can! Two birds with one stone! And if, in about five years, your ball bearings do happen to squeak, a little machine oil will remove it for a few more years. Whereas if you oil a squeaky wheel that does not have ball bearings, that can be an every-day chore because the squeak never really goes away permanently.

The third advantage to big six-inch wheels on a luggage cart is speed. Small wheels actually put drag on your walking speed, especially if they are plastic, or have plastic or metal hubs without ball bearings. And especially on rough pavement. But large wheels with ball bearings do not slow you down one bit. Precision ball bearings also put less “pull” or “strain” on your arm and shoulder because the action of the ball bearings makes the wheel turn much more smoothly and efficiently. The turn of the wheel is efficiently assisted by the engineering of the ball bearings, thus less strain on you.

Three very good reasons to look for big six-inch wheels with precision ball bearings and rubber tires on the luggage cart you purchase: better maneuverability, no annoying repetitive noise, and faster speed with less body strain. Happy traveling!

Ball Bearing – Life Expectancy and Related Issues

Though at times the bearing do not stretch up to the expected life period and experience premature failure. The two most likely reasons for it are:

-Lubricant exposed to water or moisture

-Excess of lubrication leading to high heat

Moisture in bearing lubricant

Water or moisture are extremely unfit for bearings. Moisture as minimum as 0.002 percent within bearing oil can reduce the bearing life by as much as 48 percent at one go. Generally, the water enters the bearing case through packaging leakage, cooling temperature within the case or moisture laden air. In fact if we go by the statistics then 6 percent of water content is enough for reducing the bearing life by 83 percent straight away. Thus the three main sources identified for the contamination of bearings are:

-Leakage through packing

-Washed down hoses

-Moisture within the bearing case

Excessive heat due to excess of lubricant

The problem with too much of lubrication is The bearing consumes too much of energy as it moves through the lubricant. This energy heats up the lubricant resulting in the depletion of its viscosity and later, making the lubricant to form solids in as varnish and coke.
